Cleaning and Caring for Different Types of Jewelry

December 8, 2015

Jewelry pieces are delicate and require special care and attention when it comes to cleaning and storing. In order to avoid any wear and tear and scratching against one another, it’s often recommended to store them in a cotton-lined box at room temperature. Wearing sensitive and vulnerable metals on a daily basis can cause them to lose its luster and shine over time. When jewelry comes into contact with perfumes, hair sprays, makeup and natural skin oils, they are prone to damage and corrosion.

However, with a little precaution and care, you can effectively take care of various kinds of jewelry pieces so they can adorn you longer. Keep reading to learn about how to clean and care for different types of jewelry:

Gold and Silver Jewelry

Knowing that gold and silver is both, malleable and ductile, they are chemically stable and can preserve its gleam and shine over a prolonged period of time. However, gold is more stable and durable than silver. This means that it will not chip or break easily. When it comes to cleaning gold, it’s surprising to find that gold can easily be cleaned with warm soapy water. It can even be scrubbed gently using a soft-bristled brush to get rid of stubborn grit.

When it comes to silver, however, do not store it by wrapping around a newspaper or by using elastic bands to hold the silver jewelry together as it can bind itself to silver and deteriorate it over a certain period of time. Likewise, newspaper can also stain the silver jewelry, producing ugly spots all over it. The best way to store and keep silver jewelry clean is by softly rubbing or buffing it with a soft cloth.

Diamonds and Other Gemstones

The worst thing you can possibly do while cleaning diamonds and gems is losing them. So, always clean them in a bowl filled with water, instead of pouring them all in the sink. Also, check if the stones are appropriately secured into the jewel’s claw so that you don’t lose it during the cleaning process.

In order to remove the accumulated dirt and grease on the jewels, clean them under warm soapy water in a gentle manner. One thing to keep in mind is to ensure you do the cleaning gently to avoid any scratches. Also make sure you don’t leave them soaked in water for too long.

Pearls are extremely sensitive. Even a slightest damage can cause them to lose its shine and color. Products that fall under the category of everyday use such as lotions, perfumes, nail polish remover, sprays, makeup etc. can damage the beauty and appearance of pearls. Properly wipe out any cream or spray that settles on the pearls using a soft cloth, once it’s dried out.
